BARMOUTH RESORT IMPROVEMENT GROUP

THE PALM TREE PROJECT

HOW THE IDEA WAS TURNED TO REALITY

In early 2007, the idea of Palm Trees along the Promenade was formed by Greg Courtney and Dave Morris whilst sat discussing the town in the Last Inn Pub. They then assembled a team that they thought could get the job done and formed BRIG. With the help of a wide variety of sponsors, and shear determination and hard work, they collectively delivered this unique and wonderful project that has had a dramatic effect on the town.

Over the years,  we have replaced some of the  trees and continued to water, feed, and generally look after them with love and care.  Other Volunteers have helped too, which shows what a truly valued addition these trees are to the promenade.  We replaced the pots from wood to plastic as these will last longer. Unfortunately, we had to do this as the wooden ones had begun to break during the year, and were not ideal for transport.

PALM TREE SPONSORSHIP

On the 8th April the Palm Trees (Cordyline Australis) arrived. After 14 months of careful planning, we planted them in hand made pots and placed these beautiful trees in their first positions.

On the 7th of April 2008, Rhian and Dave went to Ysgol Y Traeth in Barmouth and asked the school children there to pull out the names of the Sponsors that have donated £500 for the Palm Trees.

There was no Council money or grant funding given for the Palm Trees, and all the work was done by all BRIG members. The cost was well over £40,000 and the money raised was entirely by us.
